Floating installation methods have become increasingly popular, especially with laminate and vinyl floors. There are two floating floor installation methods: Glue Joint and Click Lock (Glueless loating).
The Glue Joint method only applies to some engineered hardwood and some bamboo floors and refers to methods where the flooring floats above the subfloor, but the planks themselves are glued together. The Click Lock method is common in vinyl and laminate flooring and doesn’t require any adhesive. This makes Click Lock one of the easiest installation methods, and great for “DIYers.”

Installation
Typically (although not always) associated with installation over a concrete slab, this form of installation involves adhering each plank directly to the subfloor. This form of installation should only be considered for an engineered hardwood, or solid bamboo, and some vinyl flooring.

Nailing or stapling down new flooring is the most common installation method for wood floor professionals if the subfloor is made of wood (typically plywood or Oriented Strand Board (OSB). A nail-down installation requires a nailer/stapler to fasten the flooring to a ¾” plywood subfloor. Generally, this is the preferred choice for on-grade or above-grade installation.
